Sunrise over the Isle of Mull,
with Iona Abbey in the foreground

Another example of this brooch, this one from 1937, with scarcer yellow enamel incorporated.

Very rare large four-colour silver and enamel penannular brooch by Alexander Ritchie; almost a combination of Celtic and Art Deco styling. The diameter is 5.5cms, and the enamels are cobalt blue, pale blue, pale green, and yellow. Reverse hallmarks are AR IONA with ICA and a Birmingham hallmark for 1939, the last year of Ritchie's production on Iona. Very few of these highly unusual brooches were made, as the champleve-inlaid enamelwork was time-consuming to produce and required much skill to finish to this high standard. Rare pieces such as this well illustrate the quality of Ritchie's craftsmanship.

Scarce very Art Deco-looking silver and enamel brooch by Alexander Ritchie, incorporating lilac enamel as well as cobalt blue, white, and yellow. Similar to a previous one on this section which has blue centre-panels. Marks are AR and recessed IONA. No hallmark. Early 1920s.

Scarce green enamel version of the silver 'Iona dove' brooch. An interesting point which hasn't been mentioned on this site before (and I should have included it), is how much Alexander and Euphemia Ritchie were not only influenced by Iona's ancient stone carvings, but also by the designs of the legendary 8th century Book of Kells (now in Trinity College, Dublin). The main picture shows Ritchie's silver and enamel pendant (reverse marks are AR and IONA, with no hallmark). The second picture shows the page from the book of Kells where the Ritchies took the design from. Thank you to Holly for sending the two pictures for comparison.

Delightful sillver and dark green enamel brooch with knotwork patterning and birds head finials. Reverse just marked AR IONA. 1920s period.

Fine two tone blue enamel and silver pendant by Alexander Ritchie. Based on The Iona Nunnery Cross design. Hallmarks for Birningham 1932. A lovely piece with beautifully-coloured enamlwork.
